Афроамериканец Антуан Хантер из города Сан-Франциско танцует столько, сколько себя помнит. Он любит рассказывать, как в четырёхлетнем возрасте решил исполнить модный тогда брейк-данс и сразу же повредил себе колено. Что отнюдь не охладило влечения к танцевальному искусству.
Глухой мальчик из бедной «чёрной» семьи поступил в школу танца, и, успешно закончив её, работал наравне со слышащими коллегами в разных данс-группах. Пиком его карьеры в мире «слышащей хореографии» стало руководство командой танцоров, в которой пять слышащих мастеров пляски подчинялись ему – глухому Антуану Хантеру.
The African American Antoine Hunter from the city of San Francisco dances as much as he remembers. He loves to tell how, at the age of four, he decided to perform a breakdance, then fashionable, and immediately injured his knee. Which by no means cooled the attraction to dance art.
A deaf boy from a poor "black" family entered a dance school, and, having successfully completed it, worked along with hearing colleagues in different dance groups. The peak of his career in the world of “hearing choreography” was the leadership of a team of dancers in which five hearing masters of dance obeyed him - the deaf Antoine Hunter.

«Я танцую, потому что я счастлив, — заявляет Хантер. – Я танцую, потому что свободен. Аллилуйя тебе, Господи, ибо дух танца спас меня!»

Antoine himself is a multi-player: he teaches in dance schools, works as a choreographer, and promotes the subculture of the deaf, and defends the rights of people with hearing disabilities, and composes movements to create new numbers for his “City Jazz Dance Group”

Антуана Хантера ещё тревожила декорация, расписанная в русском стиле, мало подходящая для привезённого им спектакля «Жизнь глухого заключённого в тюрьме». Rehearsals of Americans on the stage of the Mimiki and Gesta Theater were not easy: for hours coordinated the actions of illuminators, sound engineers and videographers. Antoine Hunter was reviewing his craft. He hope to be clear for russian audience while learning russian's different technical style. Всего в Группе городского джаз-танца — 9 человек, а в Москву прибыло шестеро, включая «играющего тренера» Антуана Хантера. Примечательно, что глухие танцоры, составляющие костяк Urban Jazz Dance Company, по жизни почти все являются в той или иной степени активистами калифорнийского общества глухих. Одна преподаёт в школе для неслышащих, другая руководит молодёжной организацией глухих, третий изучает жестовые языки мира…
А танцы для них – отдушина и неплохой способ заработка.

В общем, с первых моментов стало ясно, что постановка из Сан-Франциско – отнюдь не развлекательная вещь.
Ballerinas did not just make passes with their hands, but put meaning into these movements. Очень наглядно показали, как передразнивают глухую арестантку слышащие сокамерницы, как тюремные порядки уничтожают свободу личности. Явно проводится аналогия с обществом — с его законами, традициями и отношением к «особенным» людям.

В канву спектакля была вплетена подлинная видеосъемка реальных бесед с глухими зэками и охраняющими их надзирателями. По рассказам заключенных, в стране свободы и демократии не всё идеально: неслышащим арестантам не предоставляют переводчика даже при врачебном осмотре, для них не организовывают курсы по получению профессии, им не разрешают пообщаться по скайпу с родными даже в специально отведённое для этого время. Потому что в законе прописано так: «Заключенный имеет право позвонить». То есть глухой, если хочет, пусть берёт телефонную трубку, а вот видеосвязь – ни-ни, про неё в законе ничего не сказано…
A genuine video of real conversations with deaf prisoners and their guards guarding them was interwoven into the outline of the play. С одной стороны, постановка американцев создаёт впечатление, что в Америке чуть ли не полицейская диктатура, с другой стороны – Urban Jazz Dance Company с этим спектаклем объездила много городов США, и никто не пресекал её «непатриотичную» деятельность…

Так или иначе, но Urban Jazz Dance Company сумела удивить всех.
Such a new genre was shown by artists from San Francisco. Stage art, they say, should not be just art, but must raise acute social issues directly in the face, involving facts, figures and opinions. The audience reacted ambiguously to the American production: someone admired the new direction and thought about the problems of the deaf, while someone believed that real art should not be mixed with informative lectures and documentaries. One way or another, but the Urban Jazz Dance Company managed to surprise everyone.
